The essentials from long documents

A 60-page report, a contract with fine print, lecture notes before the exam or a technical article in another language: often you first want to know what it is about and which points matter before you spend time on every page. The summary gives you exactly this overview in bullet points.

You upload the file and choose how detailed it should be: "Short" for a few key statements, "Medium" for the most important sections, "Detailed" for a structured overview with details. In the optional task field you tell the AI what to look out for, for example deadlines, costs, methodology or open points. With very long documents, it works from the most relevant excerpts.

The result appears in a chat. There you can ask follow-up questions, go deeper into individual chapters, have terms explained or request a shorter version for an email. For web pages there is a separate tool, the Article summarizer; if you just want to ask questions about the document, use Chat with PDF.

Frequently asked questions

Which files can I summarize?

PDF, Word (DOCX), Excel (XLSX), PowerPoint (PPTX) and text files up to 30 MB. Very long documents are summarized via matching excerpts, not word for word; text extraction stops after 4 million characters.

How do I control what goes into the summary?

Via the length (Short, Medium, Detailed) and the optional task field. There you can enter things like "in three sentences", "only the payment terms", "tasks and deadlines" or "key figures as a table".

Does it work with scanned PDFs?

It works best with documents that have a text layer, meaning text you can select. ChatX first runs text recognition (OCR) on scanned PDF pages, up to 50 image pages per document; with poor scans, check the result.

How reliable is the summary?

It usually captures the key statements but may leave out nuances or shorten details. For contracts, medical or financial documents, read the decisive passages in the original and ask specifically in the chat.

What language is the result in?

Normally in the language you use the site in. If you want another language, write it in the task field, for example "summary in Spanish".

Can I ask questions about the document afterwards?

Yes. The summary appears in a chat that keeps the document in context. Ask about individual sections, terms or figures, or use "Chat with PDF" right away if you need answers rather than a summary.

What happens to my file?

The text is sent to the chosen AI provider for analysis; with long documents, text sections are additionally indexed at OpenAI for searching. The document stays in the chat until you delete the chat; uploaded files that do not end up in any chat are deleted after two days. Upload confidential documents only if that is acceptable for you and your employer.
