With Chat with PDF you upload a document and ask questions about it: the AI finds the matching passages in the text and answers from them. For PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and text files.

How the AI reads your document
After the upload, the text is extracted from the file and split into sections. When you ask a question, the tool picks out the sections that match it best and passes them to the AI model together with your question. That is why it also works with a 200-page contract or an annual report, without you having to shorten anything first.
You can switch the model at the top of the input field: a fast model is enough for summaries and simple look-up questions, a stronger one pays off for technical texts, contracts and questions that connect several passages.
Typical uses are course readings before an exam, contracts and terms before signing, user manuals, bid documents and minutes from which you only need certain points.

With your account, select a PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or text file up to 30 MB.

Enter a question
Write your first question or task into the field, for example "Summarize the key points", and click Start.

Keep asking
Ask as many follow-up questions in the chat as you need; the document stays attached.

Detach the document
Click the X on the attachment to detach the document from the chat; if it has already been used in a message, it stays stored for the history until you delete the chat.

Good to know
- Formats: PDF, DOC, DOCX, XLSX, PPTX and text files up to 30 MB; the old XLS format is not read. Document upload requires an account.
- The tool detects scanned pages automatically and reads them with text recognition (German and English, up to 50 image pages); in mixed documents the text pages are usable right away.
- PDFs with a user password cannot be read; remove the password first.
- The document stays attached to your chat until you detach it or delete the chat; uploads that do not end up in any chat are deleted after 2 days.
- The answer is based on the passages found in your document; double-check amounts, deadlines and figures against the original.
- For searching the document, the text is sent in sections to OpenAI for embedding; the questions go to the chosen AI provider. Billing is per answer based on actual usage. Chat shortcut: /pdf.
Frequently asked questions
Which files are supported?
PDF, Word (DOC, DOCX), Excel (XLSX), PowerPoint (PPTX) and text files up to 30 MB. Scanned PDFs are read automatically with text recognition, up to 50 image pages per document.
What questions can I ask?
Anything that is in the document: "Summarize chapter 3", "Which deadlines are mentioned?", "Explain the term X", "What figures are in the table on page 12?" or "What speaks against option B?".
How reliable are the answers?
The AI is meant to answer from the passages found, not from its own knowledge; deviations are still possible. With long documents, ask specifically about sections, and check important details such as amounts or deadlines in the original.
Can I query several documents at once?
One document per chat. If you upload a new one, it replaces the old one. For a comparison, open a second chat or ask the questions one after the other.
What language does the document have to be in?
Any language the model understands. You can ask in English about a German contract and get the answer in English. Text recognition for scanned pages is set to German and English.
How long are my files stored?
The document stays attached to your chat until you detach it with the X or delete the chat. A document that has not yet been used in any message is deleted when detached; one already used stays stored for the history until you delete the chat. Uploads without a chat are deleted after 2 days. The document text is sent to OpenAI for searching and the questions to the chosen AI provider; what the providers store is governed by their terms.
How much does Chat with PDF cost?
You need an account for the document upload. Billing is per answer based on the model's actual usage: the document excerpts found and your question as input, the answer and, where applicable, the thinking phase as output.
