Complete frames instead of fragments

After the first frame, an animated GIF often stores only the areas that change. If you take the file apart naively, you get partial areas and gaps. This tool assembles every frame the way it appears in the browser and saves it as PNG: losslessly and with the transparent areas of the original.

You need that for a still from an animation, for editing a sequence of images, or for single frames in presentations, sprites and your own GIFs. For long animations, every second or fifth frame is often enough; that keeps the ZIP small.

How it works

  1. 1

    Upload a GIF

Drag the animated GIF into the box, up to 30 MB, 2 minutes, 4,000 pixels per side and 8 megapixels; a single-frame GIF yields a single PNG.

  2. 2

    Choose frames

“All frames” for the sequence up to the export limit, or every 2nd, 3rd or 5th frame if a selection is enough.

  3. 3

    Download the ZIP

After “Let’s go” you download the ZIP file and unpack it; the PNGs are numbered in playback order.

Good to know

  • Input: GIF up to 30 MB, 2 minutes, 4,000 pixels per side and 8 megapixels. Output: ZIP with frame_0001.png, frame_0002.png and so on, each a complete frame with transparency.
  • At most 300 frames, 100 megapixels in total and 250 MiB of PNG data in the ZIP; the export stops at the first limit reached: in Full HD about 48 frames, at 500 × 500 pixels the full 300. With “Every 2nd frame” only the frames actually output count.
  • Processed on our server, deleted after 24 hours (hourly cleanup job); free, no sign-up; in the chat with the /giftopng shortcut.

Frequently asked questions

How many frames will I get?

The frames up to the first limit reached: at most 300, 100 megapixels in total and 250 MiB of PNG data, so about 48 in Full HD. Then choose “Every 2nd frame”, or cut or shrink the GIF beforehand.

Is transparency preserved?

Yes. Transparent areas of the GIF are saved as transparency in the PNG, not filled with white.

Are the frames complete or only the changed areas?

Complete. GIFs often store subsequent frames only as a partial area; the tool assembles every frame the way it appears during playback.

What are the files called?

frame_0001.png, frame_0002.png and so on, in the order of the animation.

Can I get a single frame as a JPG?

Unpack the ZIP file and convert the frame you want with “Convert PNG to JPG”; transparent areas are filled in the process.

Can I turn the frames back into a GIF?

Yes, with “GIF maker” from the PNGs, up to 60 frames per GIF; you set the duration per frame again there.

What happens to my file?

Input and result are deleted 24 hours after upload by an hourly cleanup job; if a more recent job is still using the input, it stays until that job’s deadline. Splitting is free.
