Video Converter – convert video online to MP4, WebM, MOV, MKV or AVI
Chat shortcut: /videoconvert
The video converter turns your video into MP4, WebM, MOV, MKV or AVI. With quality "Original" and no resolution limit, the file is only repackaged if the video and audio tracks already fit the target format; otherwise it is re-encoded.

A video in the right format
Every device has its preferences: the iPhone films in MOV, screen recorders deliver WebM or MKV, old cameras AVI or 3GP. If the TV, the editing software or the platform will not accept the file, converting it to the right format helps. Usually that is MP4, because most devices and browsers play it.
The converter first looks at what is inside your file. If you leave the quality at "Original" and the resolution unlimited, and the video and audio tracks already fit the target format, only the container is swapped: picture and sound stay unchanged, the existing codecs are kept. As soon as a different codec, a quality level or a smaller resolution is needed, the video is re-encoded; the quality level then determines how much detail is kept, there is no fixed target size.
With the resolution limit the video also becomes easier to send: "At most 720p" is enough for messengers and email. Afterwards you can carry straight on, for example compress, trim or save just the audio as MP3.
How it works
- 1
Upload the video
Drag the file into the box or select it, up to 96 MB and 15 minutes.
- 2
Choose the target format
Decide between MP4, WebM, MOV, MKV or AVI, depending on where the video is going to play.
- 3
Set quality and resolution
Leave "Original" if nothing should change, or choose High, Medium or Small and an upper limit for the resolution.
- 4
Convert and download
Click "Let's go", check the preview and download the finished video.
Typical uses
iPhone video for Windows
MOV to MP4 with "Original": a matching codec is only repackaged. If the video should also play on older devices, choose "High", then H.264 is written.
Screen recording for a presentation
WebM or MKV from the recorder to MP4 so that PowerPoint and Keynote can embed it.
Clip for your own website
Convert MP4 to WebM (VP9) if the site prefers this format; the file size depends on the quality level and the source.
Old camera footage
AVI or 3GP to MP4 so it plays on phones, TVs and in the cloud.
Good to know
- Input: MP4, MOV, M4V, WebM, MKV, AVI, WMV, FLV, 3GP, MPEG and OGV, up to 96 MB and 15 minutes.
- Output when re-encoding: MP4, MOV and MKV with H.264/AAC, WebM with VP9/Opus, AVI with Xvid/MP3. When repackaging, the existing codecs are kept, such as HEVC, AV1 or VP8.
- Quality "Original" only repackages if the codec fits the target format and no resolution limit is chosen; otherwise the video is re-encoded, as with High, Medium and Small.
- The first video track and the first audio track are carried over; additional audio tracks and subtitles are dropped.
- Resolution can be limited to 1080p, 720p or 480p; smaller videos are never enlarged.
- The file is processed on our server; an hourly clean-up run deletes input and result after 24 hours.
- Free, no sign-up and no watermark.
Frequently asked questions
Which formats can I upload?
MP4, MOV, M4V, WebM, MKV, AVI, WMV, FLV, 3GP, MPEG and OGV up to 96 MB and 15 minutes.
Do I lose quality when converting?
MP4, MOV or MKV are only containers; inside sit a video codec such as H.264 and an audio codec such as AAC. With "Original" and no resolution limit we check whether both tracks already fit the target format, for example H.264 from MOV to MP4; then they are only repackaged, without loss. Otherwise the video is re-encoded, with "High" at a high quality level; check the result in the preview.
Which target format should I pick?
MP4 plays on most phones, TVs, in browsers and editing software. WebM is meant for websites, MOV for Apple software, MKV for media players such as VLC, AVI only for older devices.
Can I reduce the resolution?
Yes. "At most 720p" reduces the shorter side of the picture to 720 pixels, smaller videos stay unchanged. Videos are never enlarged; with a resolution limit the video is always re-encoded.
How do I get the video small enough for WhatsApp or email?
Choose MP4 with quality "Small" and "At most 720p". If that is not enough, use "Video Compressor" afterwards under "Continue with".
Why don't I see a preview for MKV and AVI?
Browsers do not play these formats. The file is finished anyway; download it and open it with VLC, for example.
What happens to my video?
It is converted on our server and not passed on to third parties; an hourly clean-up run deletes input and result after 24 hours. The first video track and the first audio track are carried over. The conversion is free and needs no sign-up.
