Smaller file, same video

A phone video in Full HD quickly takes up several dozen megabytes per minute. That exceeds email attachment limits, takes ages in a messenger and fills up cloud storage. Compressing re-encodes the video as H.264 with AAC audio: details the eye barely notices are left out, while picture and sound as a whole are preserved.

You control this with two settings. The quality level determines how much image information is kept: "High" for further editing, "Balanced" for everyday use, "Small" when every megabyte counts. The maximum width shrinks the picture if the original is wider; the default is 1280 pixels, 854 or 640 pixels suit email attachments, and for full width you choose Full HD. Smaller videos are never enlarged.

The result is always an MP4 with H.264 and AAC that common devices and browsers play. There is no target size in megabytes; with sources that are already heavily compressed, the gain stays small. If the video is still too big for its destination, it usually helps to trim just the important part first and then compress. You will find both under "Continue with", along with captions or conversion to a GIF.

How it works

  1. 1

    Upload the video

Drag the file into the box or select it, up to 96 MB and 15 minutes.

  2. 2

    Choose the quality

Use "Balanced" as the default, "High" for little loss or "Small" for the smallest file.

  3. 3

    Set the maximum width

The default is HD (1280 pixels). Choose Full HD if the width should stay as it is, or 854 or 640 pixels for small attachments.

  4. 4

    Compress and download

Click "Let's go", check the result in the preview and download the smaller MP4.

Typical uses

Send by email

"Balanced" and 854 pixels for attachments with a size limit; you see the new file size in the result.

"Balanced" and 1280 pixels for quick sending; the messenger may compress again when sending.

Put it on your own website

"High" and 1280 pixels for shorter loading times with good image quality.

Make a copy for sharing

Create a smaller version for messengers or the cloud; keep the original, because re-encoding is lossy.

For job portals and forms

"Small" and 640 pixels when an upload limit of a few megabytes applies.

Good to know

  • Input: MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV, AVI, WMV, FLV and 3GP up to 96 MB and 15 minutes; output always MP4 (H.264/AAC).
  • Three quality levels (High, Balanced, Small) and four widths (1920, 1280, 854, 640 pixels), default 1280; never enlarged.
  • How much the file shrinks depends on the bitrate and codec of the source; with already compressed files the saving stays small, and there is no target size in megabytes.
  • The first video and the first audio track (AAC, 128 kbit/s) are kept; further audio tracks and subtitles are dropped.
  • Processed on our server without passing anything on to third parties; an hourly clean-up deletes input and result after 24 hours.
  • Free, no sign-up and no watermark.
  • Continue afterwards with: Video Trimmer, Video Cropper, Convert Video to GIF, Convert MP4 to MP3 or Caption Generator.

Frequently asked questions

How much smaller does the video get?

That depends on the source: phone and camera recordings with a high bitrate shrink considerably, videos that have already been compressed once, such as downloads, only a little. You see the new file size in the result; if it is not enough, choose "Small" and a smaller width, or trim out the important part beforehand.

Can I do this without quality loss?

No, the video is re-encoded. "High" keeps most of the detail, "Balanced" usually leaves enough for everyday use, and with "Small" details are visibly lost. Check the result in the preview and keep the original.

Which setting do I use for WhatsApp or email?

For email attachments with a size limit, "Balanced" and 854 pixels. For WhatsApp, "Balanced" and 1280 pixels; the messenger may compress once more when sending.

Which formats can I upload?

MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV, AVI, WMV, FLV and 3GP up to 96 MB and 15 minutes. The result is always an MP4 (H.264/AAC) that common devices and browsers play.

Is the audio preserved?

Yes. The first audio track is kept and saved as AAC; further audio tracks and subtitles are dropped.

How long does it take?

That depends on length, resolution and server load. You can leave the page open; the result appears automatically.

What happens to my video?

It is converted on our server and not passed on to third parties; an hourly clean-up deletes input and result after 24 hours. Compression runs without AI and is free.
