From clip to loop
In chats, forums and on many websites a GIF plays by itself, without a play button: as a reaction, as a short tutorial in documentation, as a product loop in a shop or wherever only images are allowed. It doesn't need the whole video, just the one moment that carries the scene.
The tool cuts the section from your video, splits it into frames at the chosen frame rate, scales them to the width and computes a palette of 128 colors that matches the colors of the clip; fine gradients are dithered in the process. Afterwards you can add text to the GIF, crop it or shrink it further.

Good to know
- Input: MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV, AVI, WMV, FLV, 3GP up to 96 MB, 30 minutes long and 3,840 × 2,160 pixels. Output: animated GIF, looping forever, without sound.
- Section up to 15 seconds, start freely selectable; frame rate 10, 12 or 15; width 320, 480 or 640 pixels, height in the video's aspect ratio; narrower videos are enlarged to the width without getting sharper.
- A color palette of 128 colors is recalculated for each clip; the file size depends on length, frame rate, width and motion.
- Processing on our server; video and GIF are deleted after 24 hours (hourly cleanup). Free, no watermark. Chat shortcut: /videotogif.
Frequently asked questions
How big will the GIF be?
That depends on length, frame rate, width and motion; roughly, 5 seconds at 480 px and 12 frames per second often come to 1 to 2 MB, more with lots of motion. For chats and forums, 320 px and 10 frames per second are better, and “GIF Compressor” helps afterwards.
Why at most 15 seconds?
GIF stores single frames and has no video compression; every additional second adds new frames, and the file grows accordingly. For longer content, a compressed MP4 is the better choice.
Which frame rate should I use?
12 usually fits. 10 gives smaller files, 15 looks smoother but costs noticeably more size.
How do I find the right start time?
Find the spot in the video player, note the second and enter it as the start. Without an entry, the GIF starts at 0 and lasts 5 seconds.
Does the GIF have sound and does it loop forever?
GIF can't contain sound. The result is saved as an endless loop; whether it plays automatically is decided by the respective app or website.
What happens to my video?
It stays on our server for 24 hours and is then deleted (hourly cleanup). The conversion is free, without watermark.
