Cut GIF – trim the start and end online, free

Cut GIF in three steps: upload the GIF, enter start and end in seconds, download the trimmed GIF. Speed and image size are kept; the result is saved with a recalculated color palette and loops forever.

What happens when cutting and when you need it
An animated GIF is a sequence of single frames, each with a fixed display duration. When cutting, you keep a contiguous range of these frames and discard the rest. You enter start and end in tenths of a second, and the cut snaps to the GIF's frame boundaries; the display duration of the remaining frames doesn't change, so the result runs at the same speed as the original.
Because every frame costs storage, the file usually gets smaller when frames are dropped: a reaction GIF with a long lead-in or a screen recording that lingers on a still frame becomes shorter and usually lighter for chats, forums and emails. The GIF is re-encoded with a new color palette and saved as an endless loop. Cutting changes the duration; to change the visible area, use “Crop GIF”; for an even smaller file, “GIF Compressor” or conversion to MP4.
How it works
- 1
Upload GIF
Drag the animated GIF into the field or choose it, up to 30 MB and 2 minutes running time.
- 2
Set start
Enter the second at which the GIF should begin, in tenths such as 1.5.
- 3
Set end
Enter the second at which it should stop, or leave 0 so the GIF runs to the end.
- 4
Download
After “Let's go” you download the trimmed GIF; under “Continue with” you'll find compressing, cropping and MP4 conversion.
Good to know
- Input and output: GIF, animated or as a single frame; up to 30 MB, 2 minutes running time, 4,000 pixels on an edge and 8 megapixels.
- Start and end in seconds, in tenths of a second; the cut snaps to the GIF's frame boundaries. End 0 means “to the end”; an end less than or equal to the start is treated like 0.
- The tool keeps exactly one contiguous section; speed and image size remain as in the original. The result is saved with a recalculated color palette and loops forever.
- The length of the GIF isn't shown after upload. Narrow it down step by step: with end 0, first trim the start, look at the result and set the end from that in a second run.
- Processing on our server; input and result are deleted 24 hours after upload by an hourly cleanup job.
- Free, no sign-up, no watermark and no AI.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find the right seconds?
You don't see the length of the GIF directly after upload. Narrow it down step by step: leave the end at 0 and first trim the start, look at the result and set the end in a second run. Tenths of a second like 1.5 are allowed.
Can I remove a part from the middle?
No, the tool keeps one contiguous section. For single frames there's “GIF to PNG”; from those, the “GIF maker” builds a new GIF without the unwanted frames, and you set the display duration per frame there again.
How precise is the cut?
You enter tenths of a second, and the cut snaps to the GIF's frame boundaries. At 10 frames per second it is usually within one frame of your entry; with GIFs with few frames per second, correspondingly further.
Does the speed stay the same?
Yes. The display duration of the remaining frames stays unchanged, only the start and end are dropped. The result always loops forever, even if the original played only once.
Does cutting make the file smaller?
Usually yes, because fewer frames remain. Because the GIF is re-encoded when saving, the size isn't exactly proportional to the duration. If that's not enough, use “GIF Compressor” afterwards or convert the GIF to an MP4.
How is this different from “Crop GIF”?
Cutting changes the duration; cropping changes the visible area. Both can be applied one after the other, and the result remains a GIF each time.
How long can the GIF be and what happens to the file?
Up to 2 minutes, 30 MB and 4,000 pixels on an edge. The file stays on our server for 24 hours and is then deleted automatically. Cutting is free and needs no account.
