The frame sequence becomes a video

GIF is an image format from the nineties: it stores a sequence of frames with at most 256 colors and no real video compression; a few seconds of animation quickly become several megabytes. An H.264 video in an MP4 file exploits the similarity of consecutive frames and usually needs much less space for the same motion.

The tool splits your GIF into frames, keeps the order and display duration and encodes an H.264 video with a fixed frame rate from them. Because a video only plays once, you can repeat the clip two to ten times, for a story, for example. Transparent spots become white, there is no sound.

You need the conversion when Instagram, X, TikTok or a messaging app only accepts video in that spot, when a GIF is too large for a website or newsletter, or when a clip stutters on your phone. For a smaller file, cropping or sound, continue with the video tools afterwards (for videos up to 15 minutes long).

How it works

  1. 1

    Upload the GIF

Drop, paste or select an animated GIF up to 30 MB, 2 minutes of running time and 4,000 pixels on a side.

  2. 2

    Choose the loops

1× for a single pass, 2×, 3×, 5× or 10× if the video should be longer than the GIF.

  3. 3

    Download the MP4

Click “Let’s go”, check the video, save it or continue with “Video Compressor” or “Video Trimmer”.

Good to know

  • Input: GIF (animated or single image) up to 30 MB, 2 minutes of running time, 4,000 pixels on a side and 8 megapixels. Output: MP4 (H.264) without sound.
  • Loops 1×, 2×, 3×, 5× or 10×; speed and frame order are kept, transparent areas become white. Results over 15 minutes (for example 10× from two minutes) are no longer accepted by the video tools afterwards.
  • Suitable for Instagram, X, TikTok, WhatsApp and websites; acceptance is governed by the respective platform; the file is usually much smaller than the GIF.
  • Processing on our server; GIF and result are deleted after 24 hours (hourly cleanup job).
  • Free, no watermark. Chat shortcut: /giftomp4.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the MP4 usually so much smaller than the GIF?

A GIF stores its frames with at most 256 colors and without video compression. The H.264 codec in the MP4 exploits the fact that consecutive frames resemble each other and therefore usually needs only a fraction of the space for the same motion.

Does the video loop like the GIF?

A video plays once; whether it loops is up to the player or the platform. If you need a fixed length, for a story, for example, choose 2, 3, 5 or 10 loops; the clip is then written into the video several times in a row.

Does the video have sound?

No. GIFs have no audio track, so the MP4 is silent. You add music or speech afterwards in an editing program or directly in the app.

What happens to transparent spots?

The generated H.264 video has no transparency. Transparent areas are filled with white; on a dark background that is noticeable.

Are speed and quality preserved?

The speed is kept. A GIF can have different delays per frame, the video gets a fixed frame rate; with very irregular GIFs the timing shifts by fractions. H.264 encodes lossily at a high quality level; small deviations from the GIF are possible.

What happens to my file and what does it cost?

GIF and video are deleted 24 hours after upload (hourly cleanup job). The conversion is free and without a watermark.
