Which crop suits which platform

Reels, TikTok, Shorts and Stories typically run in portrait 9:16, the Instagram feed square or 4:5, YouTube in landscape 16:9. If your video does not match the target format, here you decide yourself which part of the picture remains.

Choose the aspect ratio and position: "Center" for subjects in the middle of the picture, "Left or top" or "Right or bottom" if the person stands at the edge. With "Custom" you drag the frame on the first frame yourself, provided your browser can display the video, or type in pixel values, for example for a window from a screen recording. The crop is fixed for the whole clip and does not follow a moving subject.

The tool only cuts away; it does not stretch or scale anything. The crop is re-encoded in H.264, the first audio track as AAC. Less picture area often gives a smaller file. For the length, use Video Trimmer afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between cropping and trimming?

Cropping changes the picture area; the length stays the same. Trimming shortens the time; for that there is Video Trimmer.

How do I turn a landscape video into portrait?

Choose 9:16. The tool cuts a tall strip out of the picture, centered or on the side where your subject is. Whatever lies outside is dropped; if the subject moves through the picture, the crop does not follow it.

Does the video get distorted?

No, it is only cut away, not stretched.

How does "Custom" work?

If your browser can display the video, after uploading you see the first frame with a frame you can drag. Otherwise you type in the pixel values for left, top, width and height; 0 for width or height means "to the edge".

Can I remove black bars?

Yes. Choose "Custom" and drag the frame right up to the picture edge inside the bars, or choose 16:9 if the picture behind them is landscape.

Which formats can I upload?

MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV, AVI, WMV, FLV, 3GP and more up to 96 MB, 15 minutes and 3,840 × 2,160 pixels. The result comes as MP4 (H.264/AAC) with the first audio track, if present.

What happens to my video?

Input and result are deleted 24 hours after upload (hourly cleanup). Cropping is free and requires no sign-up.
