Text on every frame, with an outline for contrast

GIFs have no sound, so the punchline has to go into the picture. The tool draws your text onto every frame of the animation in the same spot, in a bold sans-serif font with an outline: white and yellow get a black one, black and red a white one. White works in most cases, yellow stands out on dark frames, black suits bright screenshots; legibility depends on the background.

The font size follows the image height: Small, Medium and Large are roughly 7, 10 and 14 percent of it. Long lines are shrunk by estimated character width, down to a minimum of 8 pixels; with small GIFs or many lines, text can run past the edge, so long captions are better split across two lines. The text is burned in permanently, so keep the original for corrections; the GIF is saved with a newly calculated color palette.

Frequently asked questions

Can I write multiple lines?

Yes, with a line break in the text box. The lines are centered; all together they may be 120 characters long.

What happens if the text is too long?

The font is shrunk by estimated character width until the longest line fits, but never below 8 pixels; with very small GIFs or many lines, text can run past the edge. A caption on two lines stays larger and easier to read.

Can the text appear only on certain frames?

No, it is on all frames. For changing subtitles, split the GIF into sections with “Cut GIF” and caption each one separately; you then get several individual GIFs.

Which font is used?

A bold, easy-to-read sans-serif font (DejaVu Sans Bold) with an outline. Accented characters and common special characters are supported, emojis are not.

Can I change existing text in the GIF?

Burned-in text is part of the frames, not a text layer. You can cut it off with “Crop GIF” or add new text in a different spot; for corrections, use the original.

What happens to my file?

Input and result are deleted 24 hours after upload by an hourly cleanup job; if a more recent job is still using the input, it stays until that job’s deadline. Adding text is free.
