Password Generator: Random, With Strength Meter, Right in Your Browser

Chat shortcut: /password

Password generator in three variants: random character string, memorable word sequence or PIN. Set the length and characters, check the strength, copy it, done. Your browser's cryptographic random number generator creates it, and it never leaves your device.

How good is the result?

Randomness instead of habit

Passwords you make up yourself follow patterns: a name, a year, an exclamation mark at the end. Attackers try exactly these patterns first, with dictionaries and billions of attempts per second. A randomly generated password has no logic that can be guessed; its strength comes from length and character variety alone.

You choose what you need: the character string made of lowercase and uppercase letters, digits and special characters offers the most combinations at a given length and suits anything a password manager fills in automatically. The word sequence made of random words can be read, remembered and typed out, for example on a TV or a console, but needs considerably more words for the same strength. The PIN gives you digits only, from eight digits upwards; its strength depends on length alone.

The password is created with your browser's cryptographic random number generator on your device. It is not transmitted, not stored and not logged, unlike services that generate passwords on their servers.

How it works

  1. 1

    Choose the type

Decide between a character string, a memorable word sequence or a PIN.

  2. 2

    Set length and characters

Set the length between 8 and 64 and switch lowercase letters, uppercase letters, digits and special characters on or off as needed. For the word sequence, the length determines the number of words.

  3. 3

    Exclude ambiguous characters

Enable "without 0/O, 1/l/I" if you need to type the password out or read it aloud.

  4. 4

Check the strength, copy and store it safely

Read the strength meter below the password, copy it with the copy button and save it in your password manager.

Typical uses

New account

Generate a separate password for every service and store it in your manager, so one leak does not open all your accounts.

Master password

A word sequence of twelve or more words that you can remember, for a password manager or disk encryption.

Wi-Fi, devices, PIN

A character string without confusable characters for the router, or a random PIN of eight or more digits for devices that allow PINs that long, instead of a date of birth.

Good to know

  • Three types: random character string, memorable word sequence and PIN. Length 8 to 64 characters, default 20; for the word sequence the number of words follows from the length (at least three words), the PIN has at least eight digits.
  • Four character types switchable individually: lowercase letters, uppercase letters, digits, special characters. An enabled character type expands the random pool but is not guaranteed to appear in every password; if a site requires a specific character, check the result or generate again.
  • The option "without 0/O, 1/l/I" leaves out easily confused characters, handy for passwords on paper or over the phone.
  • Generated exclusively in your browser with the cryptographic random number generator. Free, no account, no upload, no logging.
  • Word sequences come from a list of 50 words in your language plus a number: seven words give around 46 bits ("ok"), twelve words around 74 bits ("strong"). The strength meter shows the bit entropy of each variant; for main passwords, better use 16 or more random characters or twelve or more words.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a password be?

At least 12 characters with mixed character types, better 16 or more. For main passwords, long character strings of 16 characters or more work well; word sequences from the short list here are "ok" from seven words and only "strong" from twelve words. The meter below the password shows the rating.

Is an online password generator safe?

What matters is where the password is created. Here your browser generates it on your device with cryptographic randomness; it is not transmitted and not stored. Services that generate passwords on the server are best avoided for important accounts.

Can ChatX see my password?

No. It is created in your browser and never leaves it.

Character string or word sequence, which is better?

At the same length the character string is stronger and ideal when a password manager fills it in. The word sequence is easier to remember and type out, but needs considerably more words for the same strength; compare the bit value in the strength meter.

What does entropy mean?

A measure of the number of possible combinations, given in bits. The meter here rates: below 45 bits weak, up to 70 bits ok, up to 100 bits strong, above that very strong. This is the tool's rating, not a guarantee against every attack.

How do I remember a random password?

You don't. Store it in a password manager and remember only its master password, ideally as a word sequence of twelve or more words. Two-factor authentication adds protection wherever a service offers it.

Why are 0, O, 1, l and I excluded?

These characters look alike in many fonts. The option helps you avoid typos when you type a password from paper or read it out to someone.
