When MP3 is the better choice

M4A is the default format of Apple devices: voice memos, QuickTime recordings and music downloads land on the iPhone and Mac in it. Outside the Apple world, things get stuck: car radios, older Android devices, MP3 players, some Windows programs and upload fields do not accept the format or only show an icon. MP3, on the other hand, is widely supported.

The converter accepts M4A, as well as WAV, OGG, FLAC and MP3, and delivers an MP3 at the chosen bitrate. For a dictation or an interview, 128 kbit/s is enough; for music, 192 kbit/s is the default value. The conversion runs on our server; the uploaded file is deleted after 24 hours, the MP3 stays in your media library.

Frequently asked questions

Where do M4A files come from?

Voice memos on the iPhone, recordings from QuickTime, dictation devices and many music downloads come as M4A. That is audio in an MP4 container, usually with the lossy AAC codec, less often lossless as ALAC (Apple Lossless).

How do I get an iPhone voice memo as MP3?

The Voice Memos app saves as M4A. Share the recording via "Save to Files", upload it here and save the MP3. This works directly in Safari on the iPhone.

Which bitrate should I choose?

128 kbit/s is enough for speech and keeps the file small. 192 kbit/s is the default value for music and podcasts; 320 kbit/s is the maximum for MP3 and pays off mainly when the source itself is high quality.

Do I lose quality?

MP3 is lossy. An M4A with AAC is already lossy, so it gets encoded a second time; a lossless ALAC file loses detail for the first time. 192 kbit/s is a common starting value; how audible differences are depends on source, bitrate and listening situation. Keep the original for later edits.

Does it work with purchased music that has copy protection?

No. Old iTunes purchases with DRM carry the extension M4P and cannot be converted.

How big and how long can the file be?

Up to 50 MB and 60 minutes per file, one file per run. For the next one, click "Open tool again".

What happens to my file?

It is converted on our server; the input is deleted after 24 hours (hourly cleanup), the MP3 stays in your media library until you remove it there. Free, no account.
