A format that fits the destination
A recording comes out of the editing software as WAV, a voice memo from the phone as M4A, an album from the archive as FLAC, and the destination only accepts MP3. Or the other way around: for editing, an MP3 needs to become a WAV. The MP3 converter converts between MP3, M4A, WAV, OGG and FLAC in every direction; it also accepts AAC and WebM as input.
For MP3 and M4A you choose the bitrate. 128 kbit/s keeps voice recordings small, 192 kbit/s is a good compromise for almost everything, 320 kbit/s is the highest setting, meant for music. WAV and FLAC need no bitrate: FLAC is lossless and takes up considerably less space than WAV; WAV is written at 16 bit.
Rule of thumb: going from MP3 to WAV or FLAC makes nothing better, only bigger; every conversion re-encodes, even from MP3 to MP3, and costs a little quality each time. If possible, convert from the original. Afterwards you can trim, compress or transcribe the file right away.
How it works
- 1
Upload an audio file
Drag an MP3, M4A, WAV, OGG, FLAC, AAC or WebM into the field or select it, up to 50 MB and 60 minutes.
- 2
Choose the target format
Choose MP3 for broad compatibility, M4A for Apple devices, FLAC for lossless archiving, WAV for editing, OGG for web and games.
- 3
Set the bitrate
For MP3 and M4A: 128 kbit/s for speech, 192 as the default, 320 for music.
- 4
Convert and download
Click "Let's go" and download the finished file.
Typical uses
Share a voice memo from your phone
M4A to MP3 at 128 kbit/s: small and playable in most apps and messengers.
Prepare a recording for editing
Convert MP3 or M4A to WAV so editing software can work without detours.
Archive music space-efficiently
WAV to FLAC: the content stays lossless, and the file often gets considerably smaller.
Music for the car radio or a player
FLAC or WAV to MP3 at 320 kbit/s, because many devices only play MP3.
Sounds for web and games
Convert to OGG, which is well supported in browsers and game engines.
Good to know
- Input: MP3, M4A (AAC), WAV, OGG, FLAC, AAC and WebM; output: MP3, M4A, WAV, OGG (Vorbis) and FLAC; up to 50 MB and 60 minutes per file.
- Bitrate 128, 192 or 320 kbit/s for MP3 and M4A; FLAC is lossless, WAV is written as 16-bit PCM. Sample rate, bit depth and channels are not configurable; every conversion re-encodes, even with the same format.
- Rough figures per minute: WAV around 10 MB, MP3 about 1 to 2.4 MB depending on bitrate.
- Processed on our server and not passed on to third parties; the input is deleted after 24 hours by an hourly cleanup job, and the result stays in your media library.
- Free, no sign-up and no watermark; also available in the chat with the /audioconvert shortcut.
- Then continue with: MP3 Cutter, MP3 Compressor, Caption Generator or Audio transcription.
Frequently asked questions
Which format for what?
MP3 is played by most devices and programs. M4A (AAC) is slightly more efficient at the same bitrate and the standard on Apple. FLAC is lossless and considerably smaller than WAV; WAV is uncompressed, large and written here at 16 bit. OGG (Vorbis) suits web and games.
Which bitrate should I choose?
For speech, podcasts and dictation, 128 kbit/s is enough. 192 kbit/s is the everyday default. For music, take 320 kbit/s. The bitrate applies only to MP3 and M4A; WAV and FLAC need none, OGG uses a fixed quality level.
How big will the file be?
One minute of WAV in CD quality takes around 10 MB. As MP3 it is about 1 MB per minute at 128, 1.4 MB at 192 and 2.4 MB at 320 kbit/s. FLAC usually ends up at half to two thirds of the WAV size.
Does the quality improve if I convert MP3 to FLAC?
No. Lost details do not come back; the file only gets bigger. Lossless only pays off if the source is lossless; WAV is written at 16 bit, so 24-bit sources lose precision. Every re-encoding from MP3 to MP3 or M4A costs a little quality, so convert from the original whenever possible.
How big can the file be?
Up to 50 MB and 60 minutes, one file per run. Split longer recordings in an audio program first; to extract the audio track from a video, use Convert MP4 to MP3.
What happens to my file?
It is converted on our server and not passed on to third parties. The input is deleted after 24 hours by an hourly cleanup job; the result stays in your media library until you remove it there. You do not need an account, and there is no watermark.
How long does the conversion take?
That depends on length and target format. Leave the page open; the result appears automatically.
