Color Inverter – Invert Colors and Create a Negative
Chat shortcut: /invert
Color inverter in one click: drop a photo, choose an effect, download the negative. White becomes black, blue becomes yellow, red becomes cyan; the result is created in your browser, only formats it cannot read go briefly to ChatX.
No AI No Sign-Up
Images are processed in your browser, nothing is uploaded. Only HEIC/HEIF (and AVIF/TIFF if your browser can’t read them) are briefly sent to ChatX for conversion.
Every color becomes its opposite
A digital image consists of red, green and blue values between 0 and 255. When inverting, each value is subtracted from 255: light becomes dark, every color jumps to the opposite side of the color wheel. A film negative looks similar, but with color film it additionally carries an orange mask.
You drop a photo, a scan or a graphic, choose between color negative, black-and-white negative and plain grayscale and download the result, in the original format or as JPG, PNG or WebP; a GIF becomes a PNG still image. The pixel dimensions stay the same; everything runs in your browser; only formats it cannot read (HEIC/HEIF, some AVIF or TIFF) go briefly to ChatX.
Typical cases: making scanned negatives visible, making X-ray or microscope images easier to read, flipping line drawings from black to white, or creating a negative effect for posters, memes and story graphics.
How it works
- 1
Drop an image
Load a JPG, PNG, WebP or GIF by drag and drop, paste or file selection; HEIC from an iPhone takes a brief detour through ChatX.
- 2
Choose an effect
"Negative" for inverted colors, "Negative in black and white" for a negative without color, or "Black and white only" for grayscale.
- 3
Set format and quality
Keep the original format (a GIF becomes PNG) or choose JPG, PNG or WebP; for JPG and WebP adjust the quality slider.
- 4
Download
Click "Let's go", check the result and save it, or continue with Crop image or the Photo editor.
Good to know
- Input: JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF (first frame only), plus HEIC/HEIF; output in the original format or as JPG, PNG, WebP with a quality slider; a GIF becomes a PNG still image.
- Three effects: Negative, Negative in black and white, Black and white only; pixel dimensions stay unchanged, transparency in PNG and WebP is kept. Up to 100 megapixels per image.
- Processing in the browser without storage; exception: HEIC/HEIF as well as AVIF or TIFF that your browser cannot read go briefly (up to 50 MB) to ChatX and are not kept; camera and color profile data is lost in the process.
- Free, no AI, no sign-up, no watermark; also usable on a phone. Chat shortcut: /invert.
Frequently asked questions
What does inverting do?
Every color value is turned into its opposite: white becomes black, red becomes cyan, green becomes magenta, blue becomes yellow. A second "Negative" gives you the original again, as long as no lossy JPG or WebP was saved in between; the black-and-white effects cannot be undone.
Can I use it to view old negatives?
Black-and-white negatives become a positive directly after inverting. Color negatives additionally have an orange base color, so the result looks bluish and still needs a color correction, for example in the Photo editor.
What is the difference between the three effects?
"Negative" inverts all colors. "Negative in black and white" inverts the brightness and removes the color, similar to a black-and-white film negative. "Black and white only" converts to grayscale without inverting anything.
Is transparency kept?
Yes. With PNG and WebP, transparent areas stay transparent; only the colors are inverted. JPG has no transparency.
Is it suitable for screenshots in dark mode?
Only to a limited extent: a negative also inverts the colors, blue becomes yellow. The tool is not meant for a dark variant with the same hues.
Is my image uploaded?
JPG, PNG, WebP and GIF are processed entirely in your browser. Only HEIC/HEIF photos from the iPhone as well as AVIF or TIFF files that your browser cannot read go briefly (up to 50 MB) to ChatX and are discarded afterwards, without metadata.
