Rotate Image: Turn a Photo by 90°, 180° or Any Angle

Chat shortcut: /rotate

Rotate image when a phone photo is sideways or the horizon is tilted: drop the image, turn it in 90-degree steps with the buttons or freely with the slider. The preview shows the result immediately.

Angle 90°

Images are processed in your browser, nothing is uploaded. Only HEIC/HEIF (and AVIF/TIFF if your browser can’t read them) are briefly sent to ChatX for conversion.

When to rotate a photo

Usually it is one of two cases: a photo is sideways because the camera or scanner saved it that way, or the horizon tilts by a few degrees. For the first, the 90-degree buttons are enough, also to turn portrait into landscape. For the second, you rotate freely with the slider and check in the preview whether the line is right.

You decide what empty corners are filled with and whether the result is saved in the original format or as JPG, PNG or WebP. With a GIF, only the first frame is used, and with "Keep format" it is saved as PNG.

How it works

  1. 1

    Drop an image

Drag a JPG, PNG, WebP or GIF into the field, paste it or select it.

  2. 2

    Rotate

In 90-degree steps with the buttons or by any angle with the slider; the preview follows immediately.

  3. 3

    Choose corners and format

Corners transparent (PNG/WebP), white or black; keep the format or choose JPG, PNG, WebP, and for JPG and WebP the quality (default 92).

  4. 4

    Download

Save the rotated image; for the next image, click "Open tool again".

Good to know

  • Input: JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF; output: keep format, JPG, PNG or WebP; one image per run.
  • With 90-, 180- and 270-degree steps the pixels are only rearranged; with free angles they are recalculated and smoothed, and the canvas grows. JPG and WebP are re-encoded on saving (quality slider), PNG saves losslessly.
  • The rotation is in the pixels, not just in the metadata; camera or location data are not guaranteed to be carried over.
  • Processed in your browser, nothing is uploaded; only HEIC/HEIF and unreadable AVIF/TIFF go briefly to ChatX and are discarded afterwards.
  • Free, no AI, no sign-up, no watermark.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my phone photo sideways, or tilted again on another device?

Phones often store only a rotation flag in the metadata while the pixels stay sideways; programs that ignore the flag display the photo sideways. This tool writes the rotated pixels into the file, so the orientation no longer depends on a metadata flag.

How do I straighten a tilted horizon?

Rotate by a few degrees with the slider until the line is straight. You can then remove the resulting corners with Crop image.

Does the image lose quality?

With 90-, 180- and 270-degree steps the pixels are only rearranged. With free angles they are recalculated and slightly smoothed. When saving as JPG or WebP the image is re-encoded in any case, at the quality level you set; to avoid that, choose PNG.

Why does the image get bigger at a free angle?

A rotated rectangle needs more space. The canvas grows so nothing is cut off. The corners become transparent, white or black.

Why is the result a PNG?

With "Keep format", a JPG becomes a PNG if you choose "Transparent" at a free angle, because JPG has no transparency; a GIF is always saved as PNG with "Keep format". With the JPG format the corners become white or black.

What is the difference between rotating and flipping?

Rotating moves the image around its center; the content stays right side up. Flipping turns it over along an axis, so text appears mirrored. For that there is Mirror image.

Is my image uploaded?

No, rotating runs in your browser, on a phone too. Only HEIC/HEIF and formats your browser cannot read go briefly to ChatX for conversion.
