Passport photo maker – 2 × 2 in, 35 × 45 mm and more, with print sheet
Chat shortcut: /passport
Choose a portrait, set the template, align the head with the guides: the passport photo is made in your browser, as a single image and as a print sheet for the drugstore or photo kiosk.
No AI No Sign-Up
Move and zoom the image: place the top of your head in the upper green band, your chin in the lower one, and your nose on the center line.
Check biometric requirements yourself
The tool crops the image to the correct size and helps you get the right head size. It doesn't check whether the photo meets all requirements (gaze, expression, lighting, background, recency). The rules set by the issuing authority are what count.
Is the background not light and solid-colored? Use Background remover to remove it and fill it with white first.
Conversion happens in your browser, nothing is uploaded.
Cropping with guides instead of guesswork
Every identity document has fixed dimensions and usually a rule for how large the head may be in the picture. The tool comes with the size template for your document: you select it, move your portrait onto the guides and get an image in the template's dimensions at 300 dpi.
As a result you get two files: the single image for online applications, and a 10 × 15 cm print sheet with several copies side by side. You order the sheet like an ordinary photo print and cut the photos out.
This is useful for passports, visas, driver's licenses, student and membership cards, and documents from other countries. Note for Germany: since May 2025, German passports and ID cards require a photo that a certified photographer or the kiosk at the citizens' office transmits digitally and securely to the authority; a printed photo no longer works there.
How it works
- 1
Choose a portrait
Upload a sharp photo with a straight gaze, a light wall and no shadows on the face.
- 2
Set the template
Choose the document, for example 2 × 2 inches for a US passport or visa, 35 × 45 mm for German and Schengen documents, or another country's format.
- 3
Align the head
Move and zoom the image until crown and chin sit in the green bands and the nose is on the center line. The application photo formats and Brazil have no head-size rule; there, rule-of-thirds lines help with the composition.
- 4
Save
Download the single image or additionally the 10 × 15 cm print sheet for the drugstore or photo kiosk.
Typical uses
Visa and travel
Passport photo in the destination country's format, for example 2 × 2 inches for the USA or 33 × 48 mm for China.
Driving license and ID cards
Crop a photo for a driver's license, student card, membership or library card yourself.
Applications abroad
Application photo in 35 × 45 or 40 × 60 mm for job or university applications in countries where a photo is expected, such as Germany.
Good to know
- Eight templates: US passport and visa 2 × 2 inches, German/EU passport, ID card and Schengen visa 35 × 45 mm, United Kingdom, Canada 50 × 70 mm, China 33 × 48 mm, Brazil 3 × 4 cm, and a small and a large application photo.
- Output as JPG at 300 dpi, for example 600 × 600 pixels at 2 × 2 inches or 413 × 531 pixels at 35 × 45 mm; eight 35 × 45 mm photos fit on the 10 × 15 cm print sheet. Sharpness depends on the source photo; you check the upload requirements of an application yourself.
- Crop and print sheet are made in your browser: no upload, no storage, no sign-up, free. The separate tool "Background remover" is an AI step on our server and costs tokens.
- The tool crops and helps with the head size, but does not check whether light, expression, glasses or background meet the official rules.
- Always print the print sheet without a border and without "fit to page", otherwise the dimensions will be off.
- In the chat you reach the tool with the shortcut /passport.
Frequently asked questions
Which formats are there?
2 × 2 inches for US passports and visas, 35 × 45 mm for passports, ID cards and Schengen visas in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the EU (also the United Kingdom, with its own head size), 50 × 70 mm for Canada, 33 × 48 mm for China, 3 × 4 cm for Brazil, plus two application photo formats (35 × 45 and 40 × 60 mm).
Will my photo be accepted by the authority?
That depends on the biometric requirements: neutral expression, mouth closed, even light, light plain background, recent photo. The tool crops but does not check these points. In Germany, since May 2025 passport and ID offices only accept photos that a certified photographer or the kiosk at the office transmits digitally; for driver's licenses, visas, job applications and many other countries, your own photo is still possible.
Can I take the photo with my phone?
Yes. Have someone photograph you with the rear camera from 3 to 6 feet (1 to 2 meters) away, not as a selfie. Stand about 1.5 feet (half a meter) in front of a light, smooth wall, use soft daylight without shadows and keep your shoulders and your whole hairstyle in the picture.
How big does the head have to be?
That depends on the template: in the USA (2 × 2 inches) the head from chin to crown should be 1 to 1⅜ inches (25 to 35 mm) high, at 35 × 45 mm (Germany/EU) 32 to 36 mm, in the United Kingdom 29 to 34 mm, in Canada 31 to 36 mm, in China 28 to 33 mm. The green bands show this range in each case: crown in the upper band, chin in the lower one, nose on the dashed center line. The application photo formats and Brazil have no head-size rule and show rule-of-thirds lines.
How do I print the passport photo?
Save the 10 × 15 cm print sheet (slightly smaller than a 4 × 6 in print) and order it at a drugstore, a photo kiosk or online as a normal photo print. Important: print at actual size, without a border and without scaling, otherwise the dimensions will be off.
Can I make the background white?
Yes, with the tool "Background remover": that is an AI step on our server that costs tokens and transmits the image for it. Fill the background white or light gray and then crop the result here.
Is my photo uploaded?
Not in this tool: crop and print sheet are made entirely in your browser, nothing is stored or sent to a server. Only if you use "Background remover" beforehand does the image go to our server for that step.
