What the AI does when restoring
Old prints lose contrast and sharpness, scans bring grain and dust with them, early digital photos are often only a few hundred pixels in size. The tool smooths grain, redraws edges and rebuilds faces, that is, eyes, hair and skin texture, from what is still recognizable in the original; the AI fills in what's missing based on probability.
With the fidelity level you control how far the AI may go: “Closer to the original” for family photos where the features should stay as close to the original as possible; “Higher quality” for smoother results with more added details; “Balanced” as a starting point for most scans. “2x” is preset and doubles the side length, useful for small scans intended for print; “No” keeps the size.
How it works
- 1
Upload the photo
Drag the scan or the photographed picture (JPG, PNG, WebP, up to 20 MB) into the field or select it.
- 2
Choose the fidelity
“Closer to the original” to preserve facial features as much as possible, “Higher quality” for smooth, sharp results, “Balanced” as the middle way.
- 3
Set the enlargement
“2x” (preset) for small scans and prints, “No” if the resolution is already enough.
- 4
Restore and check
Click “Let’s go”, compare the result with the original and download it.
Typical uses
Digitize the family album
Sharpen scanned prints and share them with relatives.
Portrait for a memorial service or anniversary
Restore a small picture with “Closer to the original”, enlarge 2x, compare with the original, print.
Good to know
- Input: JPG, PNG, WebP up to 20 MB, 50 megapixels and 12,000 pixels on a side, one image per run.
- Three fidelity levels and enlargement “2x” (preset) or “No”.
- Faces are its strength; fine scratches and grain may fade during smoothing, but tears, creases and missing parts of the picture are not filled in.
- The photo goes to the AI provider for processing; on our end, input and result are deleted after 24 hours (hourly cleanup job).
- Fixed token amount per run, shown before the start; follow-up steps such as colorizing cost extra. Also in the chat via /restore.
Frequently asked questions
Which photos is this suited to?
Above all portraits and group pictures; reworking faces is the core of the tool. For landscapes and documents the sharpening can help; try it case by case.
Does the AI change the face?
It adds details that are missing in the original and can shift features; even “Closer to the original” only sticks more closely to the source. Compare the result with the original before passing it on.
Does the tool remove scratches and tears?
Fine scratches and grain may fade during smoothing. It does not fill in large tears, creases or missing corners; edit such spots first with “Remove Object from Photo”.
What if I only have a paper print?
Scan it at a minimum of 300 dpi or photograph it in even light without flash. The more of the original is in the file, the less the AI has to add.
Can I colorize the photo afterwards?
Yes, use “Colorize photo” as the next step to add color to black-and-white pictures.
Which formats can I upload?
JPG, PNG and WebP up to 20 MB, one image per run. Convert iPhone photos in HEIC format first with “Convert HEIC to JPG”.
Is my photo stored?
The photo goes to the AI provider for processing (its terms apply there). On our end, input and result are available for download for 24 hours, after which they are deleted. You see the token amount per run before the start.
