AVIF to JPG – free in your browser, also as PNG

Chat shortcut: /aviftojpg

Convert AVIF to JPG so that the Photos app, Office or an upload form accepts the image: drop the file, choose JPG or PNG, save. Current browsers read AVIF themselves; only files your browser cannot read go briefly to ChatX.

No AI No Sign-Up

Images are processed in your browser, nothing is uploaded. Only HEIC/HEIF (and AVIF/TIFF if your browser can’t read them) are briefly sent to ChatX for conversion.

When to convert AVIF to another format

AVIF saves storage space but isn't supported everywhere yet: older programs, Office, some email and chat services and upload forms reject the format or only show an icon. JPG, on the other hand, is widely supported.

The converter uses your browser’s AVIF support for this: Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge read the format themselves in current versions. You choose JPG or PNG, set the quality and convert up to 50 files in one pass. The pixel dimensions stay unchanged.

How it works

  1. 1

    Drop the AVIF

Drag one or up to 50 AVIF files into the field, paste or select them.

  2. 2

    Choose target format and quality

JPG for small files or PNG for transparency; for JPG, also set the quality (default 90) and the fill color.

  3. 3

    Download

A single image downloads directly; several come as a ZIP, and you can also save each file individually.

Good to know

  • Input: AVIF, also with transparency. Output: JPG or PNG; width and height stay the same.
  • Limits: up to 50 files per pass (several results as ZIP), 100 megapixels per image, 300 MB input and 600 MB result per pass; the detour via ChatX accepts up to 50 MB per file.
  • Quality adjustable for JPG (default 90); PNG saves losslessly, which usually makes the file larger.
  • Processing in the browser; only AVIF files your browser cannot read go briefly to ChatX and are discarded afterwards.
  • Free, no AI, no sign-up, no watermark. Metadata such as camera or location data and HDR colors are not guaranteed to be carried over; keep the original for your archive.

Frequently asked questions

What is AVIF?

An image format based on the AV1 video codec, license-free and in use since 2019. It usually stores photos smaller than JPG at similar quality, which is why many websites deliver images as AVIF.

Why won't Windows open my AVIF file?

On Windows, the Photos app and Explorer preview need an additional AV1 extension from the Microsoft Store depending on the version; older programs such as the classic photo viewer cannot handle AVIF at all. If you want to share the image, JPG is the simpler route.

JPG or PNG?

JPG for photos and anything that should stay small. PNG if the AVIF has transparent areas or you still want to edit the image, because PNG saves losslessly.

Does the image lose quality?

AVIF is usually already stored lossily, JPG compresses a second time. At quality 90 the difference is usually not visible for photos; for print or archive, choose 95 or PNG and keep the AVIF original.

What happens to transparency and animation?

JPG has no transparency: transparent areas are filled with the chosen color, default white. With PNG they stay transparent. From animated AVIF only the first frame is taken.

Is my image uploaded?

Usually not, the conversion runs in your browser. Only if your browser cannot read AVIF does the file (up to 50 MB) go briefly to ChatX for conversion and is discarded afterwards.

Can I convert several files?

Yes, up to 50 at once. You get a ZIP file and can also save each file individually.
