HEIC to PNG – iPhone photos lossless for editing

Chat shortcut: /heictopng

Convert HEIC to PNG when you want to keep editing an iPhone photo without further lossy compression, place it in a layout or archive it: drop in the file, choose a size, save the PNG.

No AI No Sign-Up

Will be saved as PNG.

Your browser can’t read HEIC: the file is sent to ChatX for conversion and discarded immediately afterward.

What you need the PNG for

The iPhone saves photos as HEIC because the format needs much less space than JPG at similar quality. Windows, many image programs and upload fields often can't handle it, though. PNG is widely supported and saves losslessly: a good fit when the photo goes into a layout, a presentation or an image editor.

The converter accepts HEIC, HEIF and AVIF and delivers a PNG at original size or reduced to 4000, 2048, 1920 or 1280 pixels. It never enlarges. This tool always converts via our server, including AVIF and regardless of what your browser can read; the file is discarded afterwards.

How it works

  1. 1

    Drop in photo

Drag the HEIC, HEIF or AVIF file into the field or choose it, up to 50 MB.

  2. 2

    Choose size

Keep the original size or limit the longest side to 4000, 2048, 1920 or 1280 px so the PNG gets smaller.

  3. 3

    Download PNG

Click “Let's go”, download the PNG or continue right away: crop, remove the background or compress.

Good to know

  • Input: HEIC, HEIF and AVIF up to 50 MB; very large pixel dimensions may be rejected. Output: PNG, saved losslessly.
  • Pixel dimensions are preserved or limited to 4000, 2048, 1920 or 1280 px (the pixels are recalculated for that); it never enlarges. With multi-image files, the first image is taken.
  • No transparency from iPhone photos; use “Background remover” after conversion for that. Camera data, location data and color profiles are removed, the orientation is applied beforehand.
  • The conversion always runs via our server; the file is sent only for that and discarded afterwards.
  • Free, without AI, without sign-up and without watermark.
  • For small files to share there's the “Convert HEIC to JPG” tool.

Frequently asked questions

When is PNG better than JPG?

When you want to keep editing the photo, use it in a design or store it without further lossy compression: PNG saves the converted, possibly reduced image losslessly. For sending or uploading, “Convert HEIC to JPG” is usually more practical because the file is much smaller.

Does the photo lose quality?

Saving as PNG is lossless; if you choose a reduction, the pixels are recalculated for it. The conversion doesn't bring back anything the iPhone camera already left out when saving as HEIC.

Why is the PNG file so large?

HEIC compresses heavily, PNG saves every pixel losslessly. A 12-megapixel photo quickly becomes 15 to 25 MB as PNG. With “Then resize to” 2048 or 1920 px the file shrinks considerably and is enough for screen and web.

Does the PNG get a transparent background?

No. PNG can have transparency, but an iPhone photo doesn't. For a cut-out subject, convert first and then use “Background remover”.

Is my photo stored?

No. With this tool the conversion always runs via our server; the file is discarded afterwards and not passed on to third parties.

Are orientation and Live Photos preserved?

The rotation from the camera data is applied, the PNG is the right way up; the remaining camera data is removed. From a Live Photo the still image is converted; the short video part is in a separate file.

Can I convert several photos?

One photo per run, up to 50 MB. For the next one, click “Open tool again” and drop in the next file.
